Handstand – Step In

The step in bridges the gap between wall supported handstands and kicking up to freestanding from the floor. By executing a controlled step into the handstand position you will develop awareness of the correct positioning as well as build up muscle endurance to actually execute the skill as you grow stronger.

Cues:

  • Push into a stacked handstand shape with one leg up straight and the other still on the support
  • Control balance with the fingers and slightly overreach with the top leg to pull the bottom foot from the support
  • Bring the legs together and secure balance
  • Utilize a tall enough support so you are not limited by your mobility and forced to jump to overcome poor leverage

Mistakes:

  • Pushing off instead of balancing into the handstand
  • Using a support too low for your mobility and skill level
  • Failing to hold the balance before switching to the next rep
